So Sherry, we learning Chinese
Well at least you'll be able to talk to your son in law in his mother's tongue and your grandchild in both tongues. lol!

It has always been my desire to be multilingual. I have no excuse for not speaking Chinese, Arabic and German. Had the opportunity, just never dedicated the time.

By now I should be looking to learn Japanese & Russian, but I probably shan't. Nevermind my only consolation is that one can only speak to (with) one person at a time - and there are enough English speakers to last me a lifetime or one thousand and one.

hi, i'm not learning chinese( only a few words here and there, tho i am learning the culture and culture of the chinese americans as well, haiku, well, that love was way before getting my grandchild). wish i could. i would like to be good in many languages but i'm not. my son-in-law isn't chinese. he is america, italian/swedish. he was born in germany tho, while his dad was teaching there. his father, until he stepped down when he remarried recently, was the head of the physics dept for CMU here.
my grand daughter is chinese because she is adopted. china is an amazing country. the pictures they took last year when they were there for 2 weeks are breathtaking.
as for languages, my grandparents and my mother could speak italian, naturally, but i haven't the ear for language. my nephew's
fiance is mexican american, born here, no trace of an accent, but she can switch back and forth in spanish during a conversation with her family absolutly effortlessly. i envy that.
languages are a talent. you are quite lucky to have coupled with the desire to learn is a wonderful thing.

I knew that, I read it in a previous post, about being descended from Gengis khan?

Don't know why I forgot, nevermind.
Her 'mother' tongue still Chinese. Its becoming the language of choice in some schools here, even above German & French, and long way ahead of Italian or Spanish.

I really must just 'pick' one more language, focus on it, learn it and then onto the other one. And Chinese might just be the way to go.

Have a nice Sunday!

yes,it's japanese. haiku and the other forms, haibun etc. are so very difficult to do well. it is deceiving because they look as if they would be simple and many people try them because of that but they are very complex. i can not, but i have a friend from my workgroup, gary blankenship who is very good at them and has been noted even by the japanese for his work.
i like to read them at times as a treat,at times, to calm my spirit.
have a great day! another sunny one today, storms later.
