In a software design meeting, we were using typical
technical jargon to discuss a data exchange interface with a vendor.
One co-worker said the programming we had ordered was delayed
because the vendor was suffering from a "severe nonlinear waterfowl issue."
Curious, the team leader raised his eyebrows and asked,
" What exactly is that?" The programmer replied,
"They don't have their ducks in a row."

a duckie joke today!

just cause i wanted to!

got the panty idea and site from BLUE GAL, THANKS!

TAH DAH!!!!!!

A man is driving a pick-up truck down the road with a bunch of ducks standing in the back. A police officer pulls over the driver and informs him that he is speeding and then asks him where does he think he's going with all those ducks. The driver says that he just doesn't know what to do anymore. The officer says, "Look, there's a zoo not far from there and that's where you should be taking them. That will take care of your problem." The man thanks the officer and drives off with his ducks.
The next day the officer again sees the pick-up truck once again speeding down the road. This time, though, all the ducks in the back are standing there with sunglasses. The officer pulls over the driver over and says, "I thought I told you to take them to the zoo!" "I did that," said the driver, "but now they want to go to the beach!"
went to see my new grandkitten last night.
she is a sweetie, very snuggly. mika is pissed,
boris is confused, but that's his normal state and
my little granddaughter is entranced by the kitten.
it was fun to see it all. s

JUST LIKE A WOMAN

(Words and Music by Bob Dylan)
1966, 1976 Dwarf Music

Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain
Ev'rybody knows
That Baby's got new clothes
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
Have fallen from her curls.
She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl.
Queen Mary, she's my friend
Yes, I believe I'll go see her again
Nobody has to guess
That Baby can't be blessed
Till she sees finally that she's like all the rest
With her fog, her amphetamine and her pearls.
She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl.
It was raining from the first
And I was dying there of thirst
So I came in here
And your long-time curse hurts
But what's worse
Is this pain in here
I can't stay in here
Ain't it clear that
I just can't fit
Yes, I believe it's time for us to quit
When we meet again
Introduced as friends
Please don't let on that you knew me when
I was hungry and it was your world.
Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes, you do
You make love just like a woman, yes, you do
Then you ache just like a woman
But you break just like a little girl.

the last 3 lines here are just, well, he really nails it, almost spooky
how well and how much he caught a woman's being in so few words.
he is a poet first and foremost, to me, a magnificent poet.

someone should tell him to get rid of the damn mustache tho! s

a maze ment

the swirls and whorls
the labyrinths of each fingerprint
throb with memories
of your skin beneath my stroke.

the breeze is cool and the late summer, sounds of crickets.
it will be dark soon. the dark is coming earlier.

my light tan is fast fading, soon i think, i will once again
glow in the dark! ; )

minutes hours days months
years go by

i chew on my thoughts at breakfast
and wash them down with coffee
no cream.

i clean with mop, pail and
pine smells to mask sour regrets

set the table

the food plentiful
the conversation, spare.

check the doors, the lights, the cat

turn down cool sheets
and imagine the shape, the feel
the scent of you.

been watching the latest storm headed towards fla.

got another c&c for the poem.

mails been messed up, but it's back. i swear
at times PK must have the same gremlins as
blogger! anyway, i was pleased to find this comment when
i came home last night:

"this is so beautiful. very sensuous and meaningful."

no crits so far, i'm surprised. tho we are beginning another poetry challenge
and that takes up a lot of time. s

Dame Margot Fonteyn:

"Take your work seriously, but never yourself."
a posting on the first draft of the poem :

2 halves = 1 whole

as i promised, i'd share any c&c i received on
this new poem. so far, just one from a PK member
who wrote, "i loved the gentleness of this poem.
i felt like i was being caressed by it!"

this made me smile. it's really a good feeling when a work
is well received. if i get anything more, good OR bad
i will post it and then go from there as to any changes
in the poem. s

i called into a radio show this morning.
THAT was a first for me and i was a nervous wreck
but i like tony norman's writing and i check in on
THE 2 POLITICAL JUNKIES blog on and off through
the day. SO, when i read that they were going to be on
1360, i just decided to give it a shot! they were very nice
and tony laughs a lot, like i do so i didn't feel too silly.
new experiences, why not? ; )
i tried to watch the HBO doc, WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE:
A REQUIEM IN FOUR ACTS, but i just couldn't. i will, i know
watch it in a rerun. i've been too down to watch that much pain.

BUT, here is the HBO site to help the victims and the city recover.
give it a look. it's something we can do for ourselves. thanks, s

this is a first draft of a new poem.
i've sent it to my workgroup to see if
anyone has any comments or crits.
i thought i'd post it here and let you see
what, if any c&c i receive and if i change
this piece drastically or in a small way if at all.

here it is:

2 halves = 1 whole

you were big
your bigness
surprised me.
i saw it on my face
making an O
in your eyes
surprised

then you became
me and i
became you as
we came
together.

you were gentle
your gentleness
soothed me.
i saw it in your face
making you LOOK
and my eyes
misted

then i became
you and me
and you grew in
my womb
like a child kicking

and i loved you
because it was like
giving birth
to myself.
the other blog that i am a contributing writer for

just got this in an e-mail. it touched me and
so i thought i'd post it here. thanks jim!

Beautifully stated

As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will. You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken. You'll fight with your best friend. You'll blame a new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back. Don't be afraid that your life will end, be afraid that it will never begin.
congrats to my friends marty and denise.

well, it's finally raining, but
it held off until the car cruise was over!

things went quite well, tho it was gawd awful muggy outside
and so, i spent most of my time inside of the club.

an entire 8 ft. table loaded with toys PLUS a large
cardboard box full AND over 100.00 to the animal shelter!

i was so pleased and the peach cobbler and brownies and
the cake i made were all declared very, very good
and all were eaten and enjoyed before i left!

my thanks to EVERYONE that made this a great day! s

found out how to do this over at blue gal's!

i'm on notice! : )

see what happens with no sleep, cobblers and silliness ensues !!!!
4:21 a.m.

there are few fruits as sensual as
ripe peaches. i am wide awake and since no
words would come, i decided to make a peach cobbler
for the cruise today. i blanched and peeled
the fresh peaches i bought
from a farm close to my home. they are red and gold
and with a smell that was tempting.

the cobbler is in the oven, the hint of nutmeg is in the night air. s

2:47 a.m. the breeze is cooling and the night sounds are at their peak.
i can not sleep and can not decide what to do and so i am here, alone
with no
words. s

Q: What do you get when you put a bunch of ducks in a box?

A: A box of quackers!
time for another guest poet.
i was going to post this earlier. i was waiting
for her bio, but she is having major computer problems
and so, i am posting this now, while the heat is still with us.
you will understand my reasons after you've read her poem.
i'll post her bio later. she has been gracious enough
to let me post her work here. thanks much sally.

Salt of the earth

These men are like that, strong capable
biceps like footballs, crawling under cars
over mountains, smelling of testosterone
and musk. Their brain in their hands as
well as their trousers. Hearts like lions
with growls worse than a bite. Watch them
at work, shoulders bare to the sun, legs
anchored to the earth. Not a word of a poem
drips from their mouths, only a smudge
of a fierce kiss from a night of wooing.
With more action than false words of a
sweet sugar daddy, men of grit never
melt in the heat of a snatched summer kiss.
They recreate and procreate, fill the earth
with their kind, lean on their shovel from
time to time, smile and let the sweat of
their labour fall to the ground.

a beautiful day, tho the grass is brown and i feel bad
for the local farmers. went to a small car cruise down along
the allegheny. it was beautiful, with the ducks and the seagulls

been that kinda day !
a few words about the west deer animal shelter:
it's a small facility and run by donations
and volunteers. it's behind the municipal
building. sad to say, but it's a rural area
and some unfeeling people take their older or
no longer able to care for pets and just turn the poor sweeties loose in the woods. maybe they
mistakenly think they can fend for themselves,
but more likely, they just discard them, like worn out shoes!
a few, are lost and barb tries hard to reunite them with their owners, but most, oh just imagine it, being thrown out into woods or along side of a road, the fear, the hunger, the loneliness!

so, if you will take a peek at the website, maybe adopt
one of these old darlings, or send a small donation, drop off some food or squeaky toys if you live around there, or call barb and ask what you can do. you won't regret it. s

http://www.westdeertownship.com/dogs/index.htm#dogs
all prayers and good thoughts to the mayor of pgh!

i think a good way to show him that we are all behind him
would be to "redd up pittsburgh" each of us do a little bit to
make this city that he so obviously loves shine!

http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/redduppgh/

oh, for those in the area.

there will be a car cruise this saturday
at the owl's in russelton.

the owls are hosting a toy drive by the west deer police.
so, if you want, stop by, 1 to 5 and bring a new, unwrapped toy
for the police to collect and distribute this coming Christmas.

it's a small ex- coal mining town, but they have BIG spirit.

thanks. s

and barb from the west deer animal shelter is supposed to be there
she usually has a sweet stray or 2 with her. she and her helpers and
gary bogan, the animal control person do an amazing job rescuing strays
with limited funds but dedicated volunteers. maybe you might find the perfect
four footed friend if you stop by or visit the west deer animal shelter.
so many of these sweet dogs have been just abandoned in the township and surrounding area.

a poetry tale:

little wanna be

"and where do your ideas come from?
the words for your little POEMS?"

with the tone of voice only
the overeducated can pull off

subtle, but not.

he smiled down from his lofty height
waiting for little wanna be
to scurry away
like a bug when a rock's been kicked over.

"where?"
little wanna be looked up
eyes wide with a smile
that wasn't.
a smile that only the littles
can pull off

and said

"don't know." cause
little wanna be knew right then
that he wasn't
and she was.

keeping the answers to herself.

as i wrote earlier, i'm going to repost my latest poem
and then some comments and crits from my workgroup
to show a bit of the process. i'm fudging a bit because this
work was well received, so it makes me look good( hey, why not? )
it's rare that i do so well the first time out! ha! s

pastels

my poems of you
have become water colored
translucent shades in
blues and greens
as if too many thoughts
have licked all the bright
from the page.

among the c&c's that i got it was mentioned that the choice of
blues and greens was a good choice,
"these colours give depth and possible implied meaning to the poem."
"i would keep 'bright'. it's essential to the poem...the more one thinks of
something(or somebody)the more difficult it becomes to picture it(or them)"

he was spot on about that. those color choices were deliberately chosen
and the poem means pretty much as he took it, tho, as another pointed out
there is a sensuality, a sexual feel to the work as well
another comment that the phrase' licked all the bright' was novel and catching
and that the poem is sad and wistful. that to was on the mark.
it's rare that my poems are taken as is by so many. usually i do strive to leave
them open to each reader's interpretations, but this i suppose, is universal, tho
some did see the sensuality and some did not. i am glad of that because i
do want each to personalize it.

one poet did, because he is also into art, realize that pastels
could be read as an art medium
but that was because it is a thing he is familiar with. i had that thought as well but
decided that most readers wouldn't be pulled up short by that.

so, this is how the c&c works, minus the real crits that we can get,
and those are useful and a big part of learning and the bettering of a poem.
if any reader has comments or crits about this work, please,
do comment here or mail me
afterthebridge@hotmail.com i'd appreciate them, i do listen. thanks, sherry

I Crave Your Mouth, Your Voice, Your Hair

DON'T GO FAR OFF, NOT EVEN FOR A DAY Don't go far off, not even for a day, because -- because -- I don't know how to say it: a day is long and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep. Don't leave me, even for an hour, because then the little drops of anguish will all run together, the smoke that roams looking for a home will drift into me, choking my lost heart. Oh, may your silhouette never dissolve on the beach; may your eyelids never flutter into the empty distance. Don't leave me for a second, my dearest, because in that moment you'll have gone so far I'll wander mazily over all the earth, asking, Will you come back? Will you leave me here, dying?

shown in me by asking me to be the list administrator

there shouldn't be much for me to do. this group is made up
of very capable and admirable poets. i was honored to be asked.
thanks Jim. sherry

this is supposed to be the last of the oppressive hot days!
we shall see i guess.

spent most of the day yesterday outside, needless to say
i am a crispy critter this morning, tho the last few years
i've been left with a tan instead of turning bright pink and then
white again. i try to slather on the sunblock but sometimes i forget
to reapply, like yesterday.

no poems today. s

A Festival Of Transition Lughnasa And Lammas

To ancient peoples, the yearly harvest was a reflection of the human cycle of birth and death. The reaping of food crops was associated with the spiritual abundance that sustained the soul. Yet harvest times were also a portent of autumn's chill and winter's harsh frosts. The Celtic peoples of centuries past acknowledged the season's first harvest with the festival of Lughnasa, the feast of the first fruits. Celebrated on August 1, it marked the midpoint between Beltane in May and Samhain in November, and symbolized a turning point in the lifecycle of Mother Earth. It was both a joyous celebration of plenty and a solemn wake for the decline of the potency of the sun god Lugh, from which the festival takes its name. What we know of Lughnasa, known also as Lammas, or the celebration of loaves, has survived in the rituals that are still practiced to this day. It is associated with grain, fruit, flowers, water, and soil, and celebrated atop summits as well as in the depths of holy wells. Traditionally, people assembled on hilltops to pick berries and engage in mock battles-the profusion of the gathered fruits and the results of the mock battles were believed to predict the outcome of the yearly harvest. Many visited ancient wells whose healing abilities were thought to be most potent on Lughnasa. Grand fairs and feasts were held, during which a portion of the newly picked grains were baked into man-shaped loaves commemorating the coming demise of Lugh. The descendants of those who first celebrated the summer harvest keep the traditions of Lughnasa alive in the fairs and sporting events that take place on August 1 throughout Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales.Lughnasa is primarily a festival of transition and thus presents a wonderful opportunity to consider how our lives have changed in the recent past. If you choose to celebrate the harvest by baking bread, adding ingredients you have reaped from your own garden will reinforce your connection to the earth. Consume your bread with loved ones while openly sharing stories of the new beginnings you are currently celebrating and the endings you are mourning. As you honor the cyclical nature of existence, reflect upon the fact that just as there is joy to be found in the sowing and reaping, each of life's phases is worthy of celebration too.
