for my retired marine friends:
ONCE A MARINE ALWAYS A MARINE!
(scroll down)
On their 50th anniversary, a wife found the negligee she wore on her wedding night and put it on. She went to her husband, a retired Marine , and asked, Honey, do you remember this negligee?
He looked up from his newspaper and said; "Yes dear, I do. You wore that same negligee the night we were married"
She said, "Yes, that's right. Do you remember what you said to me that night?
He nodded and said "Yes dear, I said: Oh baby, I'm going to suck the life out of those boobs and screw your brains out."
She giggled and said, "That's exactly what you said. So now it's fifty years later, and I'm in the same negligee. What do you have to say tonight ?"
He looked her up and down and said, "Mission Accomplished."
(thanks marty)

i fasted and took my 2nd blood test for cholesterol and got a letter today from my doctor(who i think is a SAINT) anyway, nope same readings as before! damn. my readings have ALWAYS been PERFECT. one of the few things about my body that was a non-issue-the other being my blood pressure-always a good low reading.
now- out of the blue- wham- so he wants to see me to start me on meds! i'm glad we caught it but heck, this sucks.
i tried remembering all of the meds i've been on and off of since i was a toddler- can't do it-too many.
too many meds. too many x-rays, too much crap.
but i'll get over my personal little "pity party" in a day or less and i'll make my appt. and go see what can be done.
rant over.

my brother-in-law is getting yet another big blast of radiation today- supposed to get his port put back in for more chemo this week as well. AND, when it rains- it freaking POURS-one of my brother-in-laws, brother's in-law(i know him too)is back in the hospital needing a bone marrow transplant! he was in remission a bit over a year and BOOM, a few days ago he gets that dreaded call from his doc!
i've know him for ages too. there are 6 girls in that family and one of their aunts was my godmother. the six girls all got married and have kids (and some have grandkids) the 3 younger husbands all have come down with different cancers and the 3 older husbands all have bad hearts!
that should make one pause and count blessings- i know it does that for me.

The Survivalist Guide To Protesting
A twitterer named lettersoftheliv has published an exhaustive series of tweets as a how-to guide for non-violent demonstrations. Here's how to protect yourself from tear gas:
Do not pick up/throw back tear gas canisters- will severely burn your hands.
Vinegar soaked bandana helps you breath with tear gas. Contaminates fast, have extra.
Most tear gas injuries come from PANIC/chaos,not the chemicals:Ppl lose heads.Effects intense but very short-term.
Stay calm and yell “WALK, WALK” as you walk away from tear gas/pepper spray attack- spread calm.
Do not wear contact lens- pepper spray can linger and damage your eyes.
How to protect yourself during a basij assault:
Go limp-When rigid, easy to pick up & move.If limp weight, hard to pick up & move (Always tuck your head by looking at your belly)
link arms, stay in large groups, never touch a basiji, consider Sit Down when attacked (depending on plan/setting/ and Weapon)
If grp sits dwn & police grab at 1 to beat, that 1 should scoot back & ppl behind open up & pull thru to back.Ppl in front close gap.
If sit in grp&1 beaten w/batons,Ppl drape selves over target:spread hits over 3 ppl's butts, not 1 prsn's head.Cover head & torso
"No-Hit Strategy"-attacked ppl hv instinct 2 hit back:Never let ppl rcv more than 2 hits b4 swarming as group 2 protect.
Swarm/Surround agitators who are becoming violent so they cannot escalate the situation.
If police push u n grp,unsafe 2 push back:escalates situation.All cross ankles & sit in place.Impossible 2 push seated group.
At times you deem appropriate, sing or chant- do things to keep groups spirit strong- this is unbelievably important.
Stay alert, “Ignore” harassment- ignore yelling, throwing objects, etc Do not react emotionally- Do not engage baiting
Most powerful weapon you wield is SHAME- from your own religious/cultural context, choose symbolic NV acts.
Always scan for escape routes, easiest exits.
General preparation:
Know and trust ppl u are protesting with- don't mix NV and violent protesters
Be prepared – with talking points, chants, alternative plans, exit strategy, contingency plans, supplies, etc
Practice/Roleplay NV de-escalation & tolerating/surviving/escaping "basiji" in GROUPS. Discuss-strengths,weaknesses
Share “if I get arrested” info-emergency contacts/needs
Assign jobs- scout, scene assessment, food, map, exits, etc. Have 1 person off-site know where you are.
appoint teams of people 4 tasks- a team 2 scout & swarm agitators, keep deescalated (assume agitators r plants)
Avoid alcohol, drugs and caffeine- dehydrating. Don't use anything that will impair judgement.
Stay hydrated- use oral rehydration solution:1 ts salt,8 ts sugar,1 liter clean drinking water:Stir.
If no bathroom available use privacy circle, group stands in circle around person, faces outward.
What to wear (or not to wear):
Wear a waterproof, nonabsorbent outer layer if possible. Cover your arms and legs.
Wear 2 pairs of underwear. If you get arrested, you have 1 to wear and 1 to wash.
Dress in layers, appropriately for weather.
WOMEN- Don't wear tampons- wear pads (can't remove if arrested or trapped, toxic shock syndrome)

as i was scanning the obits this morning-yeah-i do that- i noticed a familiar name- this man had grown up around the corner from me- we were almost exactly 1 month apart in age. my birthday is mid-jan. his was mid feb. he had just turned 59. his older sister used to walk me to grade school when i was in 1st and 2nd grade so i would walk around the corner to her house and wait while her family finished up breakfast.
i saw mark every day but never spoke with him. he had down's syndrome. back in the 50's. he was called a mongoloid, still. he was raised at home and rarely left until both of his parents passed and mark was an adult.
odd how 2 lives separated by 1 month and 1 block could be so different and yet i have a defect of the 17th chromosome and he had a defect on another.
R.I.P. Markie. i will always remember you as a child playing at being batman in your yard.

it's a spectacularly spring-like day here!
but i really don't feel like doing much other than just enjoying it.
i did go out and make sure that none of the rhodie flower buds were poking thru the deer netting.
the ground is muddy with some pesky ice patches still waiting to trip me so i'm trying to watch where i step.
max was investigating piles of deer poop that have thawed out! i did manage to get him to leave them alone before he decided to snack! YUCK!
he is very happy with his birthday toy. he's 2 now, wonder how many more years it will take til he calms his manic little pugglebutt down??!!

Unity
by Pablo Neruda
translated by Clayton Eshleman
There is something dense, united, settled in the depths,
repeating its number, its identical sign.
How it is noted that stones have touched time,
in their refined matter there is an odor of age,
of water brought by the sea, from salt and sleep.
I'm encircled by a single thing, a single movement:
a mineral weight, a honeyed light
cling to the sound of the word "noche":
the tint of wheat, of ivory, of tears,
things of leather, of wood, of wool,
archaic, faded, uniform,
collect around me like walls.
I work quietly, wheeling over myself,
a crow over death, a crow in mourning.
I mediate, isolated in the spread of seasons,
centric, encircled by a silent geometry:
a partial temperature drifts down from the sky,
a distant empire of confused unities
reunites encircling me.
